Sacked detective Kerry McNamara now security boss

Kerry McNamara was sacked as a police officer in Australia – so why was he given a work visa in PNG?

Matt Johnston | Sunday Herald Sun

A controversial detective forced out of Victoria Police is now a senior manager at the security company running the Manus Island immigration detention centre.

Kerry McNamara left the police force in 1998 amid claims of assault and theft, including that he stole drugs from dealers.

After working in security in Melbourne and Brisbane, including at airports, Mr McNamara this year took up a role as general manager of security with G4S in Papua New Guinea

Last month G4S – the same company embarrassed for bungling security arrangements before the London Olympics – was awarded a contract to run security at asylum seeker detention centres on Manus Island, in PNG

During his time with Victoria Police, an internal disciplinary report branded Mr McNamara as unethical and disgraceful.

It said he had “consistently assaulted members of the public, stolen their money and stolen any drug material you (McNamara) found on them”.

“Your behaviour has been without regard for the law or the rights of members of the public and has been completely unethical,” it said.

Mr McNamara did not appear before a police disciplinary hearing into the allegations and was sacked in late 1998.

A spokeswoman for G4S said Mr McNamara, who is based in the PNG capital of Port Moresby, was a “valued employee” and misconduct allegations were in the past.

“The information to which you refer is more than 15 years old and has been in the public domain,” she said.

“He has performed his duties to a high standard since joining G4S PNG in May of this year.

“As required by law, he passed all statutory background checks carried out by law enforcement and other agencies.

“Additionally, his previous employment record was verified.”

The Sunday Herald Sun contacted Mr McNamara by telephone in PNG, where he declined to answer questions, before hanging up.

The spokeswoman for G4S said Mr McNamara was not directly involved in the servicing of the DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship) contract.

Why PNG will allow such a man with such history??Just imagine Papua New Guineans trying to get visa with any mention of past history like mr mcnamara. So why is PNG entertaining such villain like this one? I reckon PNG Government should sent him back to wherever he came from.We already have enough of such outsiders like him,all over PNG!!

Judy, have you ever heard about truth in journalism? He is a good man with great references. One of the must honourable and charitable people I have ever known. PNG is extremely lucky to have him.

Robie, there is a saying that there is no smoke without a fire. Prove that the article on mcnamara is wrong. Otherwise, he should tuck his tail between his legs and quietly flee this land with shame!

I watched Australian Channel 7 Border Security program last night during which Australian customs officials cancelled a working holiday visa for a visitor arriving from the UK because of the man’s previous convictions in the UK courts. I am amazed that Australians can easily come up to PNG and get visas and work permits despite their past reputation dealings with corruption and the law in their own country. In addition, even without proper academic qualifications Australians come to PNG and land jobs that pay 4, 5, 6 times more than what they get back at home. They go from being a chef to a Community Affairs manager in the ExxonMobil LNG project or be a former useless cop to a chef and then to Executive Manager Security at Ok Tedi Mining Limited! Wow – wake up PNG…Aussies are walking all over us! We cannot go to AUstralia and find a job that does not match our academic qualifications.

I think that every human being should be given a second chance. 15 years is a long time and human beings do change.
The disappointing part about this story is the double standard that the PNG government perpetuates by allowing people with tainted histories into our country. The Indonesian Tjandra is also someone who comes to mind.

Who in the government is supporting G4S? . Who in the Government is making the most money from supporting the G4S takeover in the UK?

The man is a crook, he is evil and has now made his way to MD at G4S by devious and ruthless means. He is hated in G4S. It’s astonishing how he managed to get a visa let alone a job. Some senior people have resigned at G4S because of him.

Kerry McNamara is a good Managing Director and he perperformances are professional I believe in him and really would like to work more with him. Those comments are just comments. Peaple have to Know people from inside not from the outside. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

I don’t see any sense in it for the Papua New Guinean Government to allow such crook into such a peaceful, loving and christian nation like PNG.It is stated that he has been and is being practising unethical conduct and he is full of disgrace to his previous organisation,as a detective. So why giving him another chance here, our country is not a dump place wherein people produce some useless product somewhere else, test it there and dumped it here.PNG is a third world nation just like any other,so it is of high virtue we don’t allow dum asses into our nation, ruining &manipulating such a unique nation with his evilic conduct.I hope the immigration people out there are making proper screening and allow foreigners into our nation.Otherwise we’ll have crooks flooding all over the place, ruining our system here.
He deserve to go back from where he came from.
