Medical Society deposes super hospital advocate

In a slap in the face for Health Minister Sasa Zibe, The PNG Medical Society has removed Dr Mathias Sapuri as its President and replaced him with paediatric cardiologist Professor Tefuarani.

The proposed Pacific Medical Centre

Sapuri has been the leading advocate within the medical profession for the government’s proposed Super Hospital and is Chairman of Zibe’s Technical Advisory Group on the project.

Most medical practitioners in PNG oppose the government’s plans for the Pacific Medical Centre as it will take money and personnel away from the public health system which is in dire need of further investment and will not service the general population.

As well as removing Dr Sapuri, the Medical Society has passed a resolution opposing the PMC project. The resolution will be presented to the Health Minister.

Meanwhile, the business sector in Port Moresby is also shunning the proposed PMC after finding that the American proponents of the project are property developers, not medical specialists.

There is no word from the government on how it has spent the K20 million allocated to develop the project proposal in last November’s budget.

There is also no word from the Clinton Foundation on funding for the PMC that the government promised would be announced last month.
