Another day, another cop, another ‘on the spot’ fine….
Anyone familiar with driving in Port Moresby, or almost any other town in Papua New Guinea, is used to paying ‘fines’ to corrupt police officers who seem to mount a road block whenever they are short of a few kina for their buai or weekly shopping or a beer after work.
Today it was at Gerehu Stage 2 and the ‘fine’ was for not wearing a seat belt. The cop wanted K20 but when our driver, Paul, siad he had to go, the amount demanded was quickly dropped to K10.
Money paid, we were quickly on our way, the policeman oblivious to our camera….. and content probably with the thought that if the ‘top shots’ in Waigani can steal millions then why shouldn’t he help himself to a few kina!

Papua New Guinea

It is a sure thing and it’s happening in every towns & cities. sort of a sick mind and what many use to express as “attitude problem. they don’t think as someone who swear an oath to uphold or enforce laws of this country, at the end someone’s integrity is being questioned just for my stupidity. They don’t even look back and ask “am I satisfisfied with my daily task. Am I honest with employer who doesn’t see me what I’m doing but pay my wages/salary when it comes to forthnight etc. what would my kids, friends & family would say about this if they see me or hear of my inability to perform my roles as required by my employer.
It’s about time people should think and act senibibly but heading to nowhere.
I think this would have been far more effective if you had submitted these pictures to The National or Post Courier. As effective as the internet is for leaking big secrets, it is a very poor substitute for the mass circulation media to get information out. Even with viral e-mails of this info, you’re not going to reach more than a few hundred people via the internet. The National would have reached 50,000+ with these photos.
The Constabulary (or the Blari-Con-Stars) of PNG. What a shame… you are supposed to uphold the law whilst implementing it. Another disciplinary case for the Anthony Wagambie to deal with in addition to the wife-bashing case.
Good photo journalism… what a good use of camera. Common, make use of the camera on your mobile phone. I take my hat off to the person who took the photo.
